The founder of Manawa Honey is the Tuawhenua Trust, responsible for 9000 ha of bush clad mountains about Ruatāhuna.

Tuawhenua Forest

Manawa Honey is based in Ruatāhuna, a valley nestled in the ancient indigenous forest of Te Urewera. This is the place of origin for our tribe, Tuhoe, and has been a refuge for our people over the centuries.

The Tuawhenua Trust, founder of Manawa Honey, is responsible for 9000 hectares of bush clad mountains which is privately-owned Māori land around Ruatāhuna. Our tumanako (aspiration) ‘Kia tau te iwi me te whenua’ means ‘Our people and our land to be thriving in harmony”.

So our reason for being lies in developing our people, and enhancing our forests, for our future generations and, in our own humble way, for the planet. But our forest is suffering from the impact of introduced pests over time. To reverse this trend for our forest birds and other life in our forest is a massive challenge.

The Tuawhenua Forest Fund

Through our initiative for Matariki Ahunga Nui in 2022, we established the Tuawhenua Forest Fund that we will continue to grow over time. All koha/proceeds for this fund go to the future restoration and enrichment of the Tuawhenua forest in Ruatāhuna. There are no deductions for administration from your koha for this fund – all of these costs are covered by Manawa Honey and other activities of the Tuawhenua Trust.

As of February 2024, we have reached $78,000 in this fund. It’s a small beginning, but we have to start somewhere. The fund will use all investment earnings to grow the fund for some years yet before we move to use only investment earnings over and above inflation for the purposes of the Tuawhenua Forest Fund.

We are a charitable entity, so you can claim in your tax return in New Zealand for a donation to this fund. Please just let us know in the notes for your order if you would like us to send a receipt to you for this purpose.
