Pua-ā-Tāne: What’s Special About This Honey?

Pua-ā-Tāne Wild Forest Honey is our forest reflection in a jar. Pua is the Maori word for flower, blossom or seed and so denotes the essence of life, flourishing and fertility. Tāne is our God of the Forest. He descends from Rangi, our Sky Father, and Papa, our Earth Mother. In our stories of origin, Tāne begat all life in our forests, including all trees, birds and insects, so we see our forests and all in it as his offspring or reflection.

Each season brings into this unique honey varying combinations of forest nectars such as Rewarewa, Tāwari, Tawhero, Hinau, Kānuka and Mānuka. So it is that this honey has been named by our elders and forest experts as Pua-ā-Tāne – as a reflection of the essence of the life and bounty of our forest.

Pua-ā-Tāne Wild Forest Honey is the natural fusion of the tastes and properties from our forest trees, as collected by our bees in a special place known as Ohāua-te-Rangi in the heart of Te Urewera, just north of our base in Ruatāhuna. Our beekeepers service the hives in the Ohāua region by horseback during the season, then the harvest is collected by helicopter.

Pua-ā-Tāne is ideal for all uses of honey – as a daily elixir for good health in drink or straight from the jar, as a spread on toast or bread, for flavouring and enhancing sweet and savoury dishes in your cooking. We use Pua-ā-Tāne every day for our cool and hot drinks – with lime or lemon, tea or coffee, keeping us in great health throughout the year.

Pua-ā-Tāne: Customer Favourite

“I must say that my wife Shona and I really enjoy the Pua-a-Tane honey we recently purchased.  It is a treat of a honey which I prefer over all others…The Pua-a-Tane is really great.  I wish you every success with marketing it”.

Our Pua-ā-Tāne Wild Forest Honey is presented here as raw honey in 6kg pails. We also produce it raw in 3kg pails and creamed in 500g jars.

I came across Manawa honey online while searching for a low-glysophate, raw honey. I will never look back! I have had a lot of different honeys before but this 6kg pail of forest honey from Manawa absolutely blows all the other honeys I have tried out of the water. It isn’t so sweet that you feel sick and is utterly smooth, packed full of flavour! I will be ordering a second pail soon as my household has already eaten 2kgs out of the 6kg pail! Thanks Manawa.

Kia ora Devin. Thank you so much for your thoughtful feedback on our Pua-a-Tane Wild Forest Honey. Yeah we love it too – it’s just a wonderful fusion of the flavours of our forest, as the bees make it. And as we named it, the bounty of Tane, the God of the Forest. We’re so glad you get this honey – down to the y lol! Looking forward to bringing this great honey to your whanau in the future. Nga mihi!

I ordered 6kg last January, we’re family of 5. We’re about to finish it and I’ll be ordering 2 more pails of 6kg. The purest honey we’ve tasted. I used to stock up on meds for my daughter because she always get sick during winter season. Now, I only give her a teaspoon of honey when she gets cold. This honey is the best value for us and I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Kia ora Arianne – awesome to get this feedback for our Pua-ā-Tane Wild Forest Honey. Thank you for this. Yes you will find it has health-giving properties because of the fusion of honeys from our forest – always some manuka or kanuka or rewarewa in there (these are the strong honeys for a range of properties) with other honeys too that help bolster our immune system, especially in the winter months. Great to hear you will be ordering again. Welcome to Manawa! Nga mihi naku noa na Brenda Tahi, CEO Manawa Honey NZ.

Kia ora Roger thank you so much for your comments. Yeah we reckon this Pua-a-Tane Wild Forest Honey is a straight reflection of the pristine forest it comes from. Welcome to Manawa Roger – awesome to have you join us and to enjoy this fab honey. Cheers naku na Brenda Tahi, CEO.

Very happy with this honey. Mild flavoured.
Thankyou for your good service and the opportunity to have this lovely bush honey.

    • Brenda Tahi, CEO Manawa Honey NZ

Kia ora Lynley – apologies for coming back to you so late, but thank you for your review. Yes this latest batch of Raw Pua-a-Tane Forest Honey is quite mild tasting – it has hinau and rata in it which is a bit unusual – our Pua-a-Tane honey other times dominated by stronger tasting honeys like kanuka and rewarewa. I too am really enjoying this mild tasting batch because of its origins in these great trees of our forest. Welcome to Manawa Lynley, enjoy our honey! Nga mihi naku na Brenda Tahi, CEO Manawa Honey NZ

I live rural and was searching online for honey that would be delivered. I found Manawa honey thought I would try a 6kg of Pua a Tane honey. It arrived in good time and on trying a tespoonful promptly ordered another six kilos. I use honey for nearly all things needing a touch of sweet. I love the Manawa honey story, I have traveled many times through Ruatahuna heading to Waikaremoana for hunting. I used to stop and fish the headwaters of the Whakatane. Great memories and now in retirement I get taste the place. Thanks Manawa honey, I wish nothing but goodness for your business and rest assured that I will be buying more beautiful honey from you. Cheers.

Kia ora David – so glad you found us – love your review! So cool to hear that you came this way in the past, and yes there are great places here to fish the headwaters of the Whakatane River. I’m sure you would have caught some great river fish here. And yes, you can now taste the place – exactly – our honeys are a taste print of our forest so enjoy! Welcome to Manawa and thank you so much for your best wishes – love it! Nga mihi naku na Brenda Tahi, CEO

Wow, the BEST honey we’ve ever eaten. Thick, clean, amazing tasting honey!
We ordered a ‘bucket of honey’ according to our youngest and I’m so glad we did!
